Android has become the latest trend for modern day smartphone users. It is the no.1 OS in the world right now, pushing Apple's iOS in the 2nd spot. The latest version of Android (KitKat) is certainly going to help attracting more buyers.

While Apple's latest OS version for its idevices is iOS 7, which is running on 74% of all idevices(iPhones, iPads, iPods). iOS 7 was launched in September with the iPhone 5S and since then it's available as a free update which features a brand new UI with some cool stuffs.

Android may have surpassed the market share as well as the no of users compared to Apple's iOS, but it is still way behind when it comes to the latest OS version on devices.
Now 74% of apple devices running iOS 7 means developers working on an iOS app can concentrate on only making sure their apps are compatible with the latest version, but in case of Android only 1.1% Android devices are running KitKat(launched last month though). That's been the biggest drawbacks for Android phones.

Again 24% of Android phones are still stuck on Gingerbread which is 3 years old. This is a huge number as Android has gone passed 1 billion users milestone. So developers have to make sure that their apps are running well from Android 2.3-4.4. That's a pretty much headache not only for the developers but for Google also.

Again, some manufacturers like Samsung, HTC who modify Android too much while launching in their handsets. And it causes bad performance as well as delayed update for their devices with the latest version of Android.
