The wait is over as the two largly awaited iPads are officially launched. Here is the new 9.7" model - iPad Air(not 5), and now the new 7.9" model- the iPad mini 2. The improvement largly made to the mini model as it now has a "Retina Display".
Apple iPad mini 2
The Apple iPad mini 2 has the same screen size of 7.9" even with the same 4:3 aspect ration seen on previous version of iPad mini, but now the resolution has been 4 times better and has double of the pixel density than that of previous version. i.e. 1536x2048 pixels compared to 1024x768, and 324ppi compared to 162ppi.
The chipset was also another place where iPad mini lagged behind with a low class dual core Cortex-A9 processor. Apple has used its own Apple A7 chipset with ARMv8-based cyclone cores, a couple of generations ahead of Cortex-A9. Major upgraded GPU also can be seen as it has a PowerVR SGX 6th series GPU, the M7 motion co-processor is on board too.
The TouchID didn't make it to iPad mini2 and hence has a regular Home button. Another disappointment is that it's 0.3mm thicker(7.5mm) and 23g heavier(331g).
The Apple iPad mini 2 out of the box runs iOS 7 and storage option are 16GB, 32GB, 64GB, 128GB, as expected no SD slot is present.
iPad mini 2 will be available with Silver & White and White & Space grey & black. As usual there will be Wi-fi and 3G/LTE versions.
The Apple iPad mini2 will be available in November starting at $399 forthe basic 16GB wi-fi model, which is noticably much higher compared to the $339 starting price of the first iPad mini last year.
Surprisingly, the original iPad mini will still be available at $229.
Apple iPad Air
The Apple iPad Air not only brings a new name but it also brings new design and more power too. It received the new Appple A7 chipset along with the M7 motion co-processor. The other main upgrade is the new design - it's based on the iPad mini and has narrower bezels(43% smaller) that make the tablet easier to handle. The tablet is 20% thinner and now measures just 7.5mm, thinner than the iPad 2. The weight also went down big time - from 653g to 469g.
Other than that you get a 9.7" IPS LCD screen with 1536x2048 pixel as before. The iPad Air didn't get the TouchID either and very least people will miss it hardly.
Color options are limited in Silver & White and Space grey, and the storage options go all the way from 16GB to 128 GB.( You have to doudle each step from 16GB)
The iPad Air will be available on November 1 starting at $499.
Most surprisingly the iPad 2 is still alive and will continue selling at $399(it's three generations old now)
A new type of case for the iPads also unveiled named Smart Cover. It's similar to the iPnone 5s cases as it covers the back and comes in a variety of colors.
For the iPad Air, the Smart Cover cost $79, while the iPad mini 2 smart cover cost $69. The cases are made of leather and come in brown, black, blue and red.
