Samsung has announced the world's first 8 Gigabit(Gb) or 1Gigabyte(GB) LPDDR4 DRAM, for mobile devices which Samsung claims will provide users faster, more responsive applications, with more advanced features in higher resolution displays while maximizing the battery life. The 8 Gb low power double data rate 4 mobile DRAM will be the grand successor to Samsung's LPDDR3 memory some time in 2014, the company said in a press release.

Samsung said it will use the next generation memory to focus on large screened and high resolution smartphones tablets and ultra slim notebooks. including devices with 4K displays. And it is expected Galaxy S5 will be the first phone to use it. The Galaxy S5 is expected to be revealed in early 2014 with a brand new 64-bit chip. Now after iPhone made 64-bit chips popular with its iPhone 5S, we will see a lot of devices running with 64-bit chip. 64-bit chip enables support of 4GB of RAM or more.
"This next-generation LPDDR4 DRAM will contribute significantly to faster growth of the global mobile DRAM market, which will soon comprise the largest share of the entire DRAM market, We will continue introducing the most advanced mobile DRAM one step ahead of the rest of the industry so that global OEMs can launch innovative mobile devices with exceptional user convenience in the timeliest manner." - Samsung Executive Vice President of Memory Sales and Marketing Young-Hyun Jun said in the company's announcement regarding the new LPDDR4 RAM.
The new LPDDR4 RAM uses 20-nanometer(nm) class process technology and packs 1gigabyte(GB) onto a single die, Samsung claims it the most dense DRAM available today with four of the 8Gigabit(Gb), a single 4GB LPDDR4 package can provide the highest level of performance, with Data transfer rate of 3200 megabits per second(Mbps) per pin, i.e. twice that of the 20nm-class LPDDR3 DRAM. It uses a low Voltage Swing Terminated Logic(LVSTL) I/O interface and Samsung proposed it to be the standard spec for LPDDR4 DRAM, this chip consumes nearly 40% less energy at 1.1 volts.
Currently Samsung Galaxy Note 3 carries the highest amount of RAM in smartphones(3 GB LPDDR3 RAM) that was launched earlier this year and Samsung is about to start mass production of 8Gb LPDDR4 DRAM in 2014, so expect a lot of high end Samsung device with higher res displays along with this new LPDDR4 RAM, either in Galaxy S5 or more likely Galaxy Note 4. As soon as I hear any new news regarding this I'll surely provide that to you, till then have a clean tech aspect.
