Yesterday, Samsung and Google signed a 10 year long global patent cross-license agreement. This agreement covers both technology and business area and this will provide them patent strength against other companies (read Apple).

Back in 2012, Samsung had to pay $1.05 billion to Apple for violating several patent owned by Apple. Where as Google acquired Motorola mobility in 2012, in which Google got access to over 17,000 patents held by Motorola. Again Google has patent agreement with Microsoft, Nokia and Intellectual ventures. So, with this deal both Google and Samsung will be able to concentrate on improving research and development for current and future projects without worrying for patent issues. And we will see lots of new innovation in upcoming years.

Allen Lo, Deputy General Counsel for Patents at Google, said this regarding the deal,
"We’re pleased to enter into a cross-license with our partner Samsung. By working together on agreements like this, companies can reduce the potential for litigation and focus instead on innovation."

Dr. Seungho Ahn, the Head of Samsung’s Intellectual Property Center, said,

"This agreement with Google is highly significant for the technology industry. Samsung and Google are showing the rest of the industry that there is more to gain from cooperating than engaging in unnecessary patent disputes."
