low download speed
Tired of getting very low download speed on your Smartphone or Tablet? Sick of seeing downloading failed after waiting a long time? Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is listening to your prayers (read complaints) and has decided to soon fix a minimum downloading speed for the telecom operators in India. And the telecom providers have to deliver the data speed for wireless data services.

The Authority (TRAI) has been receiving a number of complaints from consumers regarding the poor download speed experienced by them. The Authority after examining the issue felt that there is now need to mandate the minimum download speed for the wireless data services,"
-Trai said in its latest consultation paper.

At present, there is no binding regulation on telecom operators to deliver wireless service at a particular minimum speed. 3G operators in the country claims they are giving mobile internet speed in the range of 7.1 Mbps (Megabit per second) to 21 Mbps in the colorful ads to wow the people, but in general in 7.1 Mbps speed an full length HD movie should be downloaded under 14 mins.
But, with that high speed data consumers able to download that movie in 40 mins on the best network.

Network Operators have reported to TRAI that the minimum download speed that is delivered on their most high speed 3G services lie in the range of 399 kbps to 2.48 Mbps.
The TRAI has found that minimum speed delivered to the operators doesn't even have the qualification to be called Broadband, as the minimum broadband speed is 512 kbps compared to minimum speed of 399 kbps in 3G services.

The regulator is of the view that the minimum download speed for 3G and CDMA EVDO service should be 1 megabit per second with 95% success rate. For GSM and CDMA 2G the minimum speed should be at 56 kilobit per second and for CDMA high speed data it is 512 kbps.

TRAI has sought public views on its consultation paper by 5th May and counter comments on it by 12th May. There were 4.19 crores of Wireless Broadband subscribers in January in country through mobiles or dongles as per the data released by TRAI.
