2013 has gone and the New Year has come with
promises to deliver a lot of new innovations as well as creative concepts to
come alive. In mobile industry 2013 saw the dominance of Google with their
Android OS ruling the mobile OS s where as Apple with their iOS doing business
as strong as ever and the Microsoft’s WP8 fighting to create a dent in the
mobile OS battle. In the coming months the fight bound to get hotter and we
will see companies elbowing each other for the title of no1 mobile OS. But some
new players are gearing up to jump in the action and wow the world with their
beauty and power. Here are the new OSs which have the potential to give a fight
back to Google, Apple and Microsoft for the no1 mobile OS battle.
4. Tizen:
After failing to create an impact with Bada OS, Samsung
again entered into the mobile OS race with their latest OS named Tizen. Tizen
is an open source Linux based OS and Samsung has partnered with Intel to produce
a replacement for Android. And many screen shots has been revealed and recently
Samsung launched a camera running Tizen OS, but for now there is no Smartphone
running this OS and in CES we may see Samsung launching first ever Tizen Smartphone.
There are some speculations that Samsung will use Tizen on their devices rather
than Android, but that’s definitely going to be a long story.
3. Zolla:
This is not a new OS if you remember the N9. It was
fully gesture based with no buttons as well as onscreen controls. The OS was
meego, The OS and the mobile created a huge buzz but Nokia’s deal with
Microsoft made the OS abandoned. But the developers behind this cool OS
determined to make the OS alive. So they separate themselves from Nokia and formed
Zolla. Now recently they launched their first ever Smartphone running Zolla.
The device as usual gesture based like N9 and to be frank there are a lot of
gestures to remember that’s need getting used to. And the best part of Zolla is
it supports Android apps compatibility. So the number of third party apps won’t
be a problem.
2. Ubuntu Touch for mobile:
This is a familiar name in OS industry as it is a
version of Linux. And it is already available for use in desktops as well as in
Android devices (Nexus 4 and Galaxy Nexus) too. The latest 13.10 version is
fully stable to give you the experience to understand the OS in a pleasant way.
There are a lot of step-by-step guide for installing Ubuntu Touch OS on Android. Canonical the company behind this are said to be working to get an OEM to
manufacture Smartphone’s with this OS. And in 2014 we may see a commercially
released Smartphone with Ubuntu Touch OS on-board. The apps would be based on
HTML5 and also the apps and also there will be apps with almost identical coding seen on Android
apps.
1. Firefox OS:
Mozilla famous for their Firefox browser for Desktop
and Android has shifted gears to build a HTML5 based Smartphone OS to deliver
true open source OS experience. The OS is lightweight and will run HTML5 as
well as CSS based apps. ZTE has already launched Smartphones with Firefox OS
and even LG has confirmed to launch a Smartphone based on Firefox OS. Mozilla
has stated their will be no restriction for developers to code their apps to
launch in Mozilla’s app store and users will be easily able to customize their device
according to their will. There are almost thousands app available for Firefox
OS. And Mozilla is a great community for developers so expect a lot of support
for this OS and apps being designed for the OS.
So, we hope to see a tough battle in coming years if
not the months, and this will provide consumers a lot of choices as we know the
more the merrier. So let’s sit back and enjoy the show. And please comment your
valuable thoughts in the comment section.
